27 Kuma Shochu Distilleries spread across the Kuma Basin

The Hitoyoshi-Kuma region of Kumamoto Prefecture is located in the Kuma Basin, surrounded by the Kyushu Mountains. Due to the geographical features of the basin, the rain that falls on the surrounding mountains becomes a river that moistens the paddy fields and percolates underground to form high quality groundwater. In addition, the climate, with its extreme temperature differences, is ideal for the production of good rice. There are currently 27 disilleries in the Hitoyoshi Kuma area, where good ingredients (rice) and good groundwater (water) are available, and some of these disilleries offer tours of their disilleries.
